About the Workshop
Weaving Birds
Basketry techniques with natural fibres

Join Artist Jodie Goldring who will lead participants to use the technique of cobbling to make a bird from natural fibres.
She will provide some information about basketry techniques and materials but focus on supporting you to enjoy the process of creative discovery.
The birds will be exhibited with vines, flowers, and seedpods to create a natural habitat (of sorts) over the entire weekend of Buninyong Artpreneurs Creative Escape.
The vines, flowers, and seedpods that the birds will be displayed in have been made by People with Disabilities from Pinarc for the arts project Things that Flower at Night.

There is plenty of free parking all over Buninyong within walking distance to all venues.

Meet the Artist
Jodie Goldring
Jodie was born in Darwin in 1971. Her family left after Cyclone Tracey, and Jodie grew up in a small town in the Southwest of Western Australia called Pemberton. As a young adult she lived in Perth and then travelled around Australia before moving to South Gippsland in Victoria in 1995, where she lived and studied for 7 years. Jodie completed a Diploma in Visual Art at the Central Gippsland Institute of TAFE in 1998 and BA studies in Visual Art at the Gippsland Centre for Art and Design, Monash University Gippsland in 2000.
After completing undergraduate studies, Jodie moved to Melbourne where she lived and worked as an Artist for over 10 years exhibiting in solo and group exhibitions. She completed a Diploma in Education at Melbourne University and taught secondary students Art at Billanook College in the outer east of Melbourne for 7 years. In 2012, she made a ‘tree change’ to the Central Highlands of Victoria and in 2013, made the transition to Primary Art Specialist. Jodie taught at St Francis Xavier Primary School in Ballarat East for 2 years and at Aitken Creek Primary School in 2015. She was surprised at how different the primary school was from the secondary one and her ability to adapt to a new educational context encouraged her to pursue new goals with confidence.
Jodie's goals expanded to working closely with her local community to build lasting and meaningful connections as an Artist and Teacher. Since 2015 she has responded to requests from communities in her region and beyond to support people of all ages and abilities to weave in diverse environments. For example, Jodie helps families weave lavender wands at harvest festivals so that they engage with each other to celebrate an event. She also teaches adults how to make baskets at community centre’s due to an increasing demand for these workshops. Jodie has been teaching basketry to adults at Creswick Neighbourhood Centre since June 2015 and Friends of Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne and Surrey Hills Neighbourhood Centre since the beginning of 2019. She suggests the appeal is these workshops allow participants to slow down and experience the satisfaction of creating something hand made.
